How I help

The things your clinic doesn't have time to teach.

Appointments are one-on-one and built around your own CGM and pump data. We focus on what's actually happening day to day.

SPORT & ACTIVITY

Staying in range while you move

Plans for training, games and long sessions so lows and post-exercise spikes stop running the show.

INSULIN TIMING

Dosing around training

Basal tweaks, temp targets, pre-bolus timing and split boluses matched to how your body responds.

FOOD

Protein, fat and slow rises

Understand absorption times and late rises so you can eat what you want with confidence.

YOUR DATA

Patterns and troubleshooting

We read your graphs together, find the repeat offenders, and adjust ratios and sensitivity factors.

NEW DIAGNOSIS

Support for families

Clear, compassionate guidance for parents and newly diagnosed people who feel overwhelmed.

TECHNOLOGY

Getting more from your devices

Make the most of current pumps, CGMs and automated insulin delivery settings.

OPEN-SOURCE SYSTEMS

Open-source apps, start to finish

Building, using, maintaining and troubleshooting open-source automated insulin delivery apps like Trio.

HORMONES

When hormones change the rules

Strategies for stress, growth spurts, menstrual cycles and IVF, so shifting insulin needs don't catch you off guard.

How it works

Getting started is simple.

  1. Book a session

Choose a single consultation or a package. Sessions are online, so you can join from anywhere.

  2. Answer the intake questions

When you book, you'll answer a few questions about your history, devices and goals. Complete answers mean we start with your real situation, not the basics.

  3. Build your plan together

We review your data, make changes, and follow up on what worked so progress keeps building.

About

Kathryn Alvarez

MS, ACSM-CEP, CDCES · Person with type 1 diabetes

I'm a clinical exercise physiologist and certified diabetes care and education specialist, and I live with type 1 diabetes myself. I bring both the science and the day-to-day experience of managing it to every session.

I stay current with the latest diabetes technology and use Trio, an open-source automated insulin delivery system, for my own management. I also assist with diabetes-related research studies and have published articles, which keeps me close to where diabetes care is heading.

That mix is what I bring to every session: exercise science, hands-on tech experience, and real life with type 1.

The day we started working with Kathryn is the day we reclaimed our life. My son had been diagnosed just two months earlier and I was desperate for help.

The education we've received about such a complex disease has been priceless. We learned things our medical team never taught us, things that would take years of living with diabetes to learn. From the very beginning we were met with compassion and empathy. There is something about working with people who live it and really get it. We're not afraid to try new foods, and my son has a healthy A1C.

FAQ

Common questions.

Are sessions online?

Yes. All sessions are by video, so you can join from anywhere. You'll get the meeting link when you book.

Do I need a CGM or an insulin pump?

No. I work with people on injections, pumps and automated insulin delivery systems. CGM data is helpful, but we can also work from meter readings and logs.

What should I have ready for my first session?

Answer the intake questions when you book. If you use a CGM or pump, have your recent reports and current settings handy, such as carb ratios, correction factor and basal rates. Bring your questions too.

Which devices and systems do you work with?

Most current CGMs, insulin pumps and automated insulin delivery systems. That includes open-source apps like Trio, which I use myself. I can help you build, set up, maintain and troubleshoot them.

How do packages work?

You pay once for 5 or 10 sessions, then book each one with the "Book a package session" button. The 5-session package is valid for 6 months and the 10-session package for 12 months.

Can I message you between sessions?

Sessions cover the scheduled time only, and between-session messages aren't included. If I do reply, it's a courtesy. For detailed questions, book a session. For urgent issues, contact your healthcare team or call 911.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours ahead at no charge, using the link in your booking email. Later cancellations and no-shows are charged in full or count as a used package session. See the full policy.

Do you take insurance?

No, but I can give you a receipt to submit to your insurance or health spending account. Coverage isn't guaranteed.

Does this replace my doctor or diabetes team?

No. This is coaching and education that works alongside your healthcare team. Please check with them before changing your insulin doses or device settings.
